Getting Braids For The First Time

Braids, silky twist and nappy twist are all great styles to wear in your hair. Besides being stylish it can make your daily routine easier with its get-up  and go capabilities.  They require very little maintenance and believe it or not they are pretty easy to style.

Many believe and I am one of them, that braids, twist etc. help your hair to grow. When you have a skilled braider doing your hair you will see what I am talking about. I am not bragging at all but I have been told that I have hair growing hands when I braid.

The braid is just a tool to help your hair rest. Your hair gets a chance to grow because you are not combing, brushing, blow drying, and or pressing it to death. Everyone’s hair grows. Its what we do or don’t do to it that makes it break off. So here are a few tips on how to maximize your hair’s period of rest to grow.

  1. If you have split ends have them clipped. I suggest by a professional. Hair commonly splits at the ends when unhealthy and that is wear the breakage begins.
  2. Get a good shampoo and a deep conditioner like Virgin Hair Fertilizer. Always start with a clean scalp and condition the hair well.
  3. Get a good oil or moisturizer like BBD Stretch that happens to be a moisturizer, growth cream, deep conditioner and 24 hour reconstructor in one! I know that is a lot of good things in one right? Use your oil or moisturizer daily or at least 3 times a week. Moisturized hair equals healthier hair.
  4. You will need some shine like an oil sheen or a gloss like Mixed Chicks Hair Silk. Use this daily or a few times a day as needed. This also can help to add moisture as well giving sheen.

Extra Tips:

If you want your braids to last longer always tie them down when you lay down, when showering or doing vigorous cleaning, work etc. Its not a must but when I work out I tie my hair down especially if I’m going in the steam room.  I never go in the hot sauna with twist or that style where you wear your hair half braided and half out or any braided style with curls because it makes all my curls or waves fall right out. So stay away from the heater and no hovering over open hot ovens too long.

If you have unruly edges try using a mild perm or texturizer only on the edges around your head (Shh, that’s a little inner city girl trick).

How can I grow a long and natural afro? – Hair Tip #4

To grow an afro requires plenty of patience and dedication. The in between stages are the most difficult. It can look very unprofessional if you have a job that requires dealing with the public. The fastest way is to use good deep virgin hair conditioners, and dred, twist or braid your hair. You should also cut the split ends slightly.

Can I get scene hair with sewn in extensions? – Hair Tip #3

It depends on who the stylist is. Extensions can be quite expensive to put on. You should ask to see their portfolio or books first before having someone do your hair. Referrals from a trusted source are also a good way to go. A pretty good hair stylist can work wonders on your hair. Bear in mind that most celebs, if not all celebs have on some type of hair extensions. This means that you can also achieve that “scene hair” if you let a pro do it.

Tips on Blending Your Hair With A Weave

When you get a full head weave and hair is left out in the front for a more natural look, there are a few ways to style it so that it will blend with the hair weaved in. It is somewhat easier to blend your hair with straight weaves. That is when a flat iron or curling iron can become useful.

When I first started getting weaves it seemed easier going with straight hair then I found that I was flat-ironing or curling my hair everyday. Lately I’ve been into curlier styles. I like to use Sensationnel Goddess Remi Deep Weaving and Sensationnel Goddess Remi French Weaving if I want a natural curly or wavy look. I found that it was a lot easier blending my hair with these styles without the daily dose of heat I was subjecting my hair to.  Below are a few easy techniques that I use to blend my hair with a wavy or curly weave. I have another more involved technique that I will share in an upcoming post.

  • If it is a style with big curls I can just pull out my hot curlers or use rollers to curl my own hair.
  • When I use weave with tight curls I wet set my hair with rollers small enough to wrap my hair around like rods (sponge rollers are not suggested).
  • Deep wave weaves are the easiest to blend with. I would twist my hair with some leave in conditioner and let it dry naturally. Take your hair in sections that are big for loose curls and smaller for tighter curls. When it is taken down it has a nice natural deep wavy curl to it that holds its shape.
  • For a more crimped wavy look you can use crimp irons or the kind of rollers made for crimping (found at most beauty supply stores). For a more natural look just braid sections of hair bigger or smaller depending on how deep you want the crimp to be. Use a good leave in conditioner or a setting lotion. Leave in conditioner usually yields the best results for me. Let it dry naturally or help it a bit with a blow dryer. After it is completely dry gently undo the braid and you have naturally crimped hair.

Blending Your Hair With a Weave: How do you get the right color?

Weaves are a great way to switch up your look and keep your hair looking stylish with ease on a daily basis. When I wear a weave I like it to look neat and natural so I look for hair that is close to my hair color.

Matching the right color to your hair can be a task, especially if your hair does not fall between the standard #1 through #8 colors. I have sandy brown hair, so there is naturally more than one hue to my hair. It’s not light enough for a #4 and it’s not dark enough for a #1 or #1B.

A lot of people will buy human hair and dye it to their own hair color. While many people do this it is not suggested. You can still achieve your desired style however adding chemical to human hair can weaken the life of the natural style. The hair may shed more and if it is the curly type it can loose its natural curl pattern.

I usually dye my own hair to match the hair that I am having weaved in. You can use a temporary or permanent dye depending on what you like. I usually use a temporary dye as it is not as harsh on the hair. Remember that whenever you dye your hair you have to make sure that you keep it properly moisturized. Dyeing your hair can strip out the natural oils that your hair needs. Dry hair that is not sufficiently moisturized does not help your hair to grow. Always make sure to deep condition your hair after dyeing it.

Regardless of the method you choose your hair will look great, with a more natural look when both your hair and the weave are cloer to the same color.

Hair weave tangling and looking frizzy? – Hair Tip #2

Is your hair weave tangling and looking frizzy? Think about a plastic bag. You can’t straighten it after you squeeze or wrinkle it. Unfortunately the truth is that in some hair products the human hair is mixed with synthetic hair strands and there is nothing you can do to untangle it for more than a few minutes at a time.  If the hair is all human hair then you can try the roots detangler, Ecoly Tri Wheat Detangler, cream of nature shampoo (the red one), or any good low sulphate detangling shampoo. Getting good quality human hair and taking care of it properly is really the right way to get that gorgeous looking hair that turn heads.

Taking your brand new hair into the pool? – Hair Tip #1

Take your new hair wig or hair extension into the pool? Think twice before you do it! As much as you’d love to show off your new hair in the pool don’t get it wet. Chlorinated water is very harsh on the hair and will shorten it’s life.
